ποΈ GENERAL SUMMARY & TOP HIGHLIGHTS
Picking up from last night's digest (Wed Oct 14, 7:01 PM). The day's dominant thread is the midterm run-up turning legal and violent at once. This afternoon the Justice Department sued California to block counting mail ballots from about 20,000 voters it calls "likely noncitizens" β seen as a long shot, with California's secretary of state saying the list "lacks both the detail and function to be of any investigative use." It arrives alongside reports that federal officials are investigating letters containing suspicious substances sent to senators and state election officials. Late tonight two grim alerts followed: 3 children and 1 adult were killed in a shooting at an Oregon elementary school in Bend (the suspect is dead, possibly shot by an armed bystander), and a teen was arrested over a plan to attack a Hindu temple in suburban Chicago β he had hundreds of rounds of ammunition at home and told a co-worker his gun had jammed. Earlier, a fiery transit-bus crash east of Calgary's airport left three dead (Globe alert, no link), and a school roof collapse in Peshawar, Pakistan killed a first-reported 20 children β tonight's Evening puts the toll at 32.
β» Ukraine, following up on last night: Zelensky said Ukraine will keep striking Russian oil refineries despite Trump's demand to stop, and sharply criticised Trump's dealings with Putin. This builds on last night's Starshield cutoff and Kyiv grid strike; the Globe adds that KyivβWashington relations soured after the U.S. President lifted sanctions on Russian diesel, and that Russian missiles also knocked out power stations in Kharkiv. β» Inflation: last night's 3.7% CPI is now framed by 1440 as the last print before the midterms β oil has been above $106 a barrel since August, diesel is up 70%, the Fed has signalled at least one more hike, and its next meeting (Oct 27β28) falls days before Election Day; stocks fell Wednesday (S&P β1.1%, Nasdaq β1.9%). Tonight's Evening adds that 30-year mortgage rates held at 7.4% for an eighth week. β» Pope Leo XIV: after last night's report of surgery, the NYT now names the diagnosis as lung adenocarcinoma and notes that regular scans could catch such cancers sooner. β» Guilfoyle: the NYT ran its rise-and-fall profile of the ambassador the White House asked to resign. Separately, Trump cancelled the livestream of the Fort Hood shooter's execution; only victims' immediate families will witness it.
In Canada, Industry Minister MΓ©lanie Joly spelled out what Cleveland-Cliffs could face if it proceeds with up to 500 layoffs at Stelco in Hamilton and Nanticoke (Globe Morning Update, no link); Ontario Premier Doug Ford says the CanadaβU.S. relationship has "changed permanently," and Trump repeated the "51st state" line at an Arizona rally. The Economist's cover package argues Mark Carney (approval near 70%) shows middle powers how to handle a dangerous world, and its science section asks what if the machines take over science?. Tech: Anthropic told investors Q3 revenue rose about 45% to $16.8B as it weighs a possible record IPO as early as next month, and Netflix cut about 1,000 jobs, its biggest layoff since 2022. In Victoria, municipal elections are this Saturday, Oct 17, with BC's provincial election a week later on Oct 24.
