πŸ—žοΈ GENERAL SUMMARY & TOP HIGHLIGHTS

The day's dominant story was energy-driven inflation. September's U.S. Consumer Price Index rose 3.7% from a year earlier, with gasoline up 34% as energy prices have spiked since the U.S. went to war with Iran (NYT Breaking News: Inflation accelerates; The Evening). The hot print pushed the U.S. 10-year yield higher, and Globe columnist Scott Barlow relayed Scotiabank's view that investors should wait before buying rate-sensitive REITs, utilities, pipelines and telecoms until yields stabilize. BMO's Doug Porter noted that "this year's inflation story has been about energy and almost nothing else." Separately, Social Security announced a 3.6% cost-of-living raise for 2027, the largest since 2023, and 1440 noted bank stocks held up on strong Q3 earnings while Bumble jumped 56.6% on a $1.3B take-private deal.

Politics and security dominated the rest of the cycle. Russia hit Ukraine's energy grid overnight, cutting power to about 600,000 people in Kyiv, and Ukraine says its military lost access to Starshield, the military Starlink service, without explanation (The Evening). In the U.S. midterms, the Texas Senate race is tightening, midterm ad spending has topped $10B (NYT), and 1440 reports Elon Musk is the largest known donor of the cycle at $366M. The White House asked Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign, and Pope Leo XIV is recovering from surgery for lung cancer. In Canada, four former Alberta premiers, including Rachel Notley and Jason Kenney, joined forces to urge a 'Canada' vote in next Monday's separatism referendum, and a Seattle judge kept an alleged Tumbler Ridge shooting accomplice in custody.

On the tech side, Google made Gemini 4 Argon broadly available at discounted API pricing, Anthropic published how it replaced Git with an in-house system called Scion as merges grew from ~2,500 to 30,000+ per day, and an OpenAI engineer was arrested over a bug planted in an executive conference room (SF Standard). Character.AI filed for bankruptcy, with Disney expected to pick up part of its assets (TechCrunch).
