π° EVENING NEWSLETTER DIGEST
Friday, October 16, 2026, 7:02 PM PDT β covers Thu Oct 15, 7:01 PM β Fri Oct 16, 7:01 PM PDT (since the last completed digest)
NEWSLETTERS REVIEWED THIS PERIOD (16 emails): The Globe and Mail β Morning Update, Breaking News Γ3 (immigration rules, terrorism verdict, Anthropic/Nova Scotia), Breaking News (Carney in Alberta, Thu night), Local Matters (B.C. elections); The New York Times β The Evening, Breaking News Γ3 (Oregon update, Brewers/Dodgers, Paxton/Musk); 1440 Daily Digest; TLDR; TLDR Dev; Atlantic Intelligence; Our World in Data Brief; Capital Daily (Victoria, BC).
Link note: Globe, NYT, OWID and Capital Daily links are the newsletters' own click-tracking redirects (destinations can't be resolved from this environment); TLDR, Atlantic and most 1440 links are decoded to real destinations. The three NYT Breaking News alerts and the Globe "Carney in Alberta" alert came back inline and their links were not captured, so those items are unlinked (the same events appear with links in The Evening, Morning Update and 1440).
ποΈ GENERAL SUMMARY & TOP HIGHLIGHTS
Picking up from last night's digest (Thu Oct 15, 7:01 PM). The biggest new story for Steve's world landed late this afternoon: Anthropic has signed on to a data-centre campus at Point Tupper, Nova Scotia, a project its developer EverWind Fuels says could cost $10 billion β about $8B for the campus and $2B for EverWind's wind portfolio β with Anthropic promising new clean energy on the grid and protection for existing ratepayers. It lands in the same news cycle as β» the data-centre backlash and energy-cost themes from earlier digests, and as the Globe's note that the CSE is planning its own 60 MW Ottawa-area data centre (est. $1.5β1.85B). Also from Ottawa today: new Express Entry rules announced by Immigration Minister Lena Diab award extra points to people who've worked a year in a high-wage job in Canada or hold a high-paid offer, favouring doctors, engineers, programmers, nurses and tech workers.
Alberta is the national story heading into the weekend. Thursday evening in Calgary, Carney urged Albertans to vote to stay in Canada and to reject Premier Smith's other nine ballot questions in Monday's referendum (Oct 19); the Globe also reports US-based activity pushing separation and questions about Indigenous voter access. β» Following last night's Calgary bus-crash report, the Globe's morning edition adds that three people died. Also in Canada: a youth was found guilty of terrorism charges over a 2023 plan to kill Jewish people in Ottawa (Fri), and Carney's Building Canada Strong Act (Bill C-39) is moving through the Commons β relevant to anyone building for major-project proponents. In B.C., municipal elections are tomorrow, Sat Oct 17, with the provincial vote Oct 24; the Globe notes housing quotas are a touchy issue in Oak Bay.
In the U.S., β» Oregon: the shooter at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend was stopped by a bystander who turned out to be the father of two students at the school (Kaylub Giamanco); the dead are a teacher and three children aged 5, 8 and 11, and a 7-year-old and another teacher remain critical β last night we had only the first toll and "armed bystander." β» Press secretary: the NYT's Evening reports Katie Zacharia was fired Friday after five days. Also new: the U.S. deficit is nearing $2 trillion, the highest since the pandemic. Overnight, most of Ken Paxton's Senate money traces to Elon Musk ($158M, NYT alert), and Texas Democrat Talarico raised a record $64M in Q3. β» Ukraine: the energy "ceasefire" ended Thursday when Ukraine struck a refinery southeast of Moscow; the Globe says EU leaders rallied round Zelensky while Trump called the strikes a "disgrace." β» Hasan execution: the Dec. 3 livestream is now confirmed cancelled after bipartisan backlash (1440). β» Markets: a calmer day than Wednesday β S&P +0.3%, Dow +1.1%, and the 10-year yield fell to 5.1%, its biggest one-day drop in over a year (CNBC), though wholesale inflation ran 6.3% year over year. Thursday night, the Brewers swept the Dodgers to reach their first World Series since 1982.
