πŸ—žοΈ GENERAL SUMMARY & TOP HIGHLIGHTS

Picking up from last night's digest (Mon Nov 2, ~7:02 PM PT), which led with election eve, the resumed Canada–U.S. trade talks, Iran/Hormuz and oil, and the Binance hack.

New today β€” U.S. midterms: Election Day and the first results. Last night's "final stretch" is now the real thing. By NYT's count, control of Congress and dozens of statehouses are being decided today, with ~400 Times journalists and analysts on the count; the Evening guide warns about the early-vote "blue mirage" and expects Democrats to be in a solid position to take the House while the Senate (Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Ohio, Texas) could stay open into Wednesday or beyond. The Globe's Morning Update framed the contest as a voter reckoning over cost of living, the Iran war and Canadian tariffs, but cautioned that gerrymandering and tight margins make a "blue tidal wave" far from certain. At 6:05 PM PT NYT opened live results; at 6:38 PM PT it called the first marquee Senate race β€” Democrats held New Hampshire, where Rep. Chris Pappas beat former Republican senator John E. Sununu, making Pappas the first openly gay man elected to the U.S. Senate; and at 6:41 PM PT it said its live forecast needle shows Democrats with an edge in both the Senate and the House. Nothing is decided yet β€” treat this as the state of play at ~9:40 PM ET, not a result.

↻ Election-week legal skirmishes. Last night we reported the Trump administration asking the Supreme Court to make California hold 20,000 mail-in ballots. Update: the Supreme Court rejected that emergency appeal (1440), so California can keep counting. NYT adds that the Justice Department sent target letters to Democrats in its Alaska ballot-stacking probe, and a voting-machine problem in Westchester County, N.Y. forced officials to collect ballots by hand; turnout was high in battleground states.

↻ Iran / Middle East. Since last night: Trump said most of the roughly $4B in direct U.S. aid to Israel will be "cut off at the end of the year" β€” he says it was agreed with Israel months ago and that Israel would instead pay for U.S. weapons β€” and Israel shared intelligence that Iran is considering chemical weapons, which drew alarm from some U.S. officials and scepticism from others. (Last night's Hormuz-reopening and oil-price items have no fresh update in today's newsletters.) NYT also reports the Trump administration is discussing an agreement with Venezuela that could allow a long-term U.S. military presence.

New in Canada. The Globe's afternoon alert: Carney, speaking at the Commonwealth Summit in Antigua, said Russia will not be allowed to compete at next month's world junior hockey championship in Alberta, for as long as the war in Ukraine continues β€” after the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled Friday that Russia must be reinstated; Sweden, Finland, Czechia and Latvia had already said they would refuse to play Russia. Also from the Morning Update: Alberta released proposed new provincial riding boundaries that expand Calgary and Lethbridge into rural areas β€” NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi vows a legal challenge, and approval is expected before the fall session ends Dec. 3; Finance Minister Champagne says Thursday's federal budget will include new measures for small and medium-sized businesses (the Globe's schedule differs from last digest's "Nov. 5" β€” both point to this week).

↻ Cyberattack on supermarket freezers. Last night we flagged the Army investigating whether its freezers were hacked. Now European supermarkets have been hit by a second suspected cyberattack: per 1440, chains in seven countries (Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Sweden) report suspected hacks that made freezers overheat, forcing them to throw out inventory.

↻ Markets and tech. 1440 recaps Monday's close: S&P 500 βˆ’0.5%, Dow +0.4%, Nasdaq βˆ’1.1% amid the continued tech sell-off. Apple (which we said was reporting Monday) beat expectations with 12% revenue growth in its first report under CEO John Ternus. Anthropic's earlier-reported twelvefold quarterly revenue jump now comes with $895B in spending commitments ahead of its IPO. New: Marvell is buying Lumentum in an AI-networking deal (1440 says $115B; TLDR's WSJ link says $80B in all stock β€” figures differ between newsletters).

Other. NYT reports a 24-year-old died after collapsing near the finish of the NYC Marathon (Sunday's race), and that officials believe ice and weather contributed to the Florida private-jet crash we noted last night. Poland beefed up border security with Russia over "disturbing movement"; Zelensky expects Russia to escalate while Ukraine is short of missiles. Karl Bushby finished a 28-year walk around the world in Hull, England.
