Timing guide: 1440, Globe Morning Update, TLDR and TLDR Dev are morning editions recapping the weekend / FridayβSunday; NYT The Evening and Market Factors are same-day (Monday). The War Room covers the past week. The Economist Insider and Atlantic emails are promos for election-eve programming.
ποΈ GENERAL SUMMARY & TOP HIGHLIGHTS
Picking up from last night's digest (Sun Nov 1, ~6:05 PM), which led with the revived CanadaβU.S. trade talks, six by-elections on Dec. 7 and the BC time change.
New today β U.S. midterms, final stretch. The whole news cycle is election eve. About 50 million Americans have already voted, with turnout up in Senate battleground states versus the last midterm and early data leaning Democratic; NYT polls show Democrats ahead in seven battleground states including Texas and Kansas. The Senate is riddled with wild cards β Republicans could hold, Democrats could flip four seats, or a 50-50 split could hand JD Vance tiebreaking votes. Money: the Globe says this is the most expensive midterm in at least two decades (over US$3.6B raised by Sept. 30), while 1440 puts total spending at a record $11.6B (GOP ads $5.2B vs. Democratic $4.8B; Elon Musk ~$450M; the Texas Senate race alone tops $573M). Late legal/political skirmishes: the Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to order California to hold 20,000 mail-in ballots for further scrutiny, and Trump said he'd issue pre-emptive pardons to allies (including Musk) if Democrats win Congress. Market Factors adds Citi's call for a Democratic sweep and flags the real market risk: whether Trump accepts the results. The Economist's Insider promos a Tuesday 1 PM ET Inside Economics with Trump's former acting CEA chair Pierre Yared ("Has Trumponomics delivered?") and notes the AI boom has masked the damage from tariffs, attacks on the Fed, the Iran war and borrowing; The Atlantic streams an election-night show Tuesday at 9 PM ET.
β» CanadaβU.S. trade talks (from last night). Last night we reported Carney's "productive" Sunday call with Trump. Since then, the Globe's Morning Update reports a source saying Trump ordered his team to resume formal talks, with negotiations expected to begin "in a few days". Canada walked away in August; both sides would pick up where they left off, still deadlocked over matters such as auto trade. The Economist's War Room adds a defence-procurement angle: Canada released its first National Security Strategy in 22 years last Thursday and is weighing a Saab Gripen joint venture with Sweden that could shrink its F-35 order β a hedge against dependence on America (Gripen ~$85M vs. up to $110M per F-35; roughly half the lifetime cost).
β» Iran / Hormuz & oil. Not in last night's digest but a developing market story: Iran says it could reopen the Strait of Hormuz in as little as two days, citing progress in Qatar-mediated talks (it wants sanctions lifted and frozen assets released). Oil fell sharply on the news, though more than 35 ships were attacked in the strait last month, the most since the war began. Separately, 1440 notes OPEC+ is holding December output flat.
β» Binance hack. We flagged the Binance hack Saturday. Update: the FBI has blamed North Korea for the $6.3B theft, and bitcoin slid ~2%. TLDR also carries NYT's inside account of how the hack went down (an informal ~100-person war room, deposits and withdrawals halted overnight Thursday).
Markets. 1440 recaps Friday Oct 30 (new to this digest): stocks closed lower β S&P 500 β1.8%, Dow β1.1%, Nasdaq β2.9% β after Amazon and Alphabet missed earnings; Apple reports today. TLDR notes OpenAI's latest round raised less than half of its $30B target at a $1.25T valuation (vs. $1.4T hoped for), tied to the AI-stock selloff. NYT notes Anthropic's Q3 revenue rose twelvefold year over year.
Weekend / Europe. German anti-conscription protests turned violent Saturday (100k+ in 34 cities, 100+ police injured, 50+ arrested; Hamburg barricades burned), and France's youth-led protests ran a third straight weekend; French high schools reopen Monday and police expect more demonstrations. A private jet crashed near Palm Beach on Sunday, killing all 9 aboard. In sport, the Golden State Valkyries won their first WNBA title in Game 7 (68-63 over the Dream) and the NYC Marathon turned 50.
Late recaps (already covered last night): the six Dec. 7 by-elections (Globe Morning Update repeats them and adds that Carney's second budget lands Nov. 5).
