πŸ—žοΈ GENERAL SUMMARY & TOP HIGHLIGHTS

Picking up from last night's digest (Sun Oct 25, ~7:05 PM), which led with B.C.'s Conservative majority and Lula's re-election in Brazil.

New today β€” Anthropic opens its books. The biggest Monday story is the financial prospectus for what could be the largest I.P.O. ever: per The Evening, Anthropic reported first-half revenue of $16.3 billion (a 14-fold increase year on year) against a net loss of $80.7 billion driven largely by a one-time charge, and says it is contractually committed to as much as $807 billion of data-centre and compute spending over the next decade. The offering could value it at about $2 trillion and raise $100 billion, though the company warns it may need more financing sooner than expected. Other key numbers from the filing. Related: Meta and SpaceX are raising tens of billions for A.I., and Microsoft offered buyouts to a quarter of its work force. Market Factors adds the supply-chain angle: data-centre build costs have reached US$49M per megawatt (up US$10M in a year) and BofA now sees US$2.1 trillion of data-centre spending in 2028.

New today β€” the Comey cases, round two. Two Comey-family stories landed within hours of each other. At 9:37 AM a judge ruled that the Trump administration unlawfully fired Maurene Comey (James Comey's daughter, a Manhattan trial lawyer who handled the Epstein and Sean Combs prosecutions). Then, late in the afternoon (7:18 PM ET), the Justice Dept. brought more charges against James Comey, accusing him of leaking national-security information to the Times in October 2016; his lawyers say it centres on an issue already investigated that never led to charges.

↻ Following up: Iran and Israel's election (vote is Tuesday, Oct 27). Last night's digest flagged a risk of U.S.–Iran "full war." Today's NYT alert says Netanyahu spent weeks trying to orchestrate a new airstrike on Iran before Tuesday's vote, but was resisted by the military's chief of staff, per three senior Israeli defense officials. The Evening adds that Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan made a rare joint visit to Tehran amid reports that the U.S. and Israel are drawing up plans to renew attacks, and that Israelis vote tomorrow. The Economist's War Room likewise argues that politics, not strategy, could mean more Israeli strikes. ↻ The Economist's Insider also asks whether Trump, Putin and Xi are aligning, with a three-way summit rumoured at next month's APEC in China.

↻ Following up: B.C. and Brazil (both already in last night's digest). B.C.: the Globe's Monday-morning recap gives final-ish numbers β€” Conservatives 64 seats, NDP 27, Greens 2 (99% of polls) β€” and the new premier Lorne Doerkson's first moves: an independent review of finances (citing a $14-billion deficit), work with Alberta and Ottawa on the Pacific Link pipeline, and repeal of B.C.'s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, setting up a clash with Indigenous leaders. The Globe's five takeaways piece follows up. Brazil: Lula's win now has numbers (51.8% per the Globe) and consequences β€” Brazil's benchmark stock index fell more than 14% and the real weakened more than 10% after the result; FlΓ‘vio Bolsonaro has refused to concede and called for the results to be annulled. Starlink/Ukraine: ↻ a thread from last night's Economist note on Europe's satellite dependence β€” Musk acknowledged on Saturday an active role in restricting Ukraine's Starlink, accusing Kyiv of using it for offensive drones (1440); Trump reportedly phoned Musk to restore full access, and both systems are now reported working. The War Room asks if America also withheld ballistic-missile warning and concludes it "can probably be taken at its word."

Canada, Monday: Prime Minister Carney and the premiers held a first-of-its-kind meeting focused only on First Nations issues, and Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew called for abolishing the Indian Act, holding up his own status card as "a race-based form of identification." The AFN has linked the talks to new funding asks before the Nov. 5 federal budget and to concern over fast-tracked major-project approvals. Toronto also voted in its mayoral election Monday.

Smaller items: U.S. markets closed Friday down (S&P βˆ’0.5%, Dow βˆ’1.2%, Nasdaq βˆ’0.2%) with oil near a five-month high (1440); the midterms are eight days away, with the House looking good for Democrats and the Senate unsettled (The Evening); and actor Walter Koenig (Chekov, Star Trek) died at 90.
