🗞️ GENERAL SUMMARY & TOP HIGHLIGHTS
The dominant story is energy and instability. Oil jumped after Houthi strikes on Saudi airports, the second round in a week, which killed three people (NYT), while tankers in the Strait of Hormuz keep coming under attack and the US is reportedly preparing options to resume major combat against Iran (NYT). That feeds a bond-market worry: the Economist's cover asks "Will bonds blow up?", 10- and 30-year US Treasury yields hit their highest since 2002 (1440), the 30-year US mortgage rate is 7.4% (NYT), and the Fed minutes hint at another quarter-point hike (MarketWatch via 1440). The Economist also flags an "almighty" LNG crunch that could eventually flip into a glut (Economist).
In Canada the headlines were national unity and resource policy. Ottawa will bar medical assistance in dying where mental illness is the sole condition while allowing advance requests (Globe Morning Update). Cold Lake First Nations filed for judicial review of the "national interest" designation of the Pacific Link pipeline, saying they were left out of consultations (Globe). The Globe's In Depth feature explores separation pressure in Alberta and Quebec, and Morning Update notes Musk's call for Quebec, Alberta and Saskatchewan to leave after the Parti Québécois win (Globe). Anne Carson became the third Canadian to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (Globe), and Stephen Jarislowsky, the corporate-governance champion, died at 101 (Globe).
In tech, AI dominated: OpenAI's batch of roughly 370 math results has mathematicians stunned and demanding transparency (NYT, 1440), Anthropic shipped Claude Haiku 5.5 and OpenAI rolled out GPT-6 with an "Intelligent UI". Elsewhere, Vance accused Microsoft of abusing the H-1B program (NYT), and a Tennessee inmate survived a failed lethal injection (1440).
