๐๏ธ GENERAL SUMMARY & TOP HIGHLIGHTS
The most dramatic story today was a FlyDubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv where one pilot stabbed the other and the plane dropped more than 17,000 feet. Passengers and crew charged the cockpit and two off-duty pilots landed the plane safely in Saudi Arabia. Netanyahu said the attacker appeared to be trying to crash the jet, which carried at least 160 people. In the U.S., Tennessee's case against Christa Pike went back and forth all day. A federal court paused her execution, and late in the evening the Supreme Court allowed it to go ahead. She would be the first woman executed in the state in about 200 years. Other news: U.S. forces formally withdrew from Iraq after more than 20 years, Hegseth gave a "State of the Force" speech and is reportedly cutting 20% of generals and admirals, and Britain's PM Andy Burnham said Iran "played a part" in a terrorism plot near an air base. Closer to home, four pedestrians were struck by a vehicle on Tsawwassen First Nation during a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation event. Delta Police believe a medical incident caused it.
Markets and public finances are under strain. The U.S. 30-year Treasury yield reached 5.6%, its highest since 2002, and consumer confidence is at its lowest since 2014. The Economist's Insider asks what tax system the rich world will need if AI weakens the wage-based tax base. In Canada-U.S. trade, a U.S. ban on about $1B of Canadian imports, including dairy, motorcycles and alcohol, took effect. Oura postponed its ~$15B IPO because of market uncertainty. Dutch police and the FBI announced the arrest of an alleged ShinyHunters member. The FBI says the group has breached more than 140 organizations.
AI news was dominated by OpenAI's DevDay 2026, with more than 20 announcements. They include GPT-6.1 Sol at $2/$10 per million tokens, "Dots" (always-on agents with their own cloud computers, aimed at Meta's Muse), an Agents API and a Decisions API. At Apple, new CEO John Ternus is reorganizing the company to move faster and run leaner. The NYT reports Meta is describing its AI data centres to the IRS as an "experiment" so it can claim billions in R&D tax credits. Meanwhile, Congress is leaving Washington without acting on data centres or AI safety.
โก UNUSUAL & OVERLOOKED STORIES
- A Kelvin wave is heading for California. El Niรฑo has sent a large pulse of ocean energy toward the coast. Sea levels could rise half a foot or more within days, adding to tides and climate-driven rise, with risks of flooding, erosion and saltwater intrusion. The story includes impact maps.
