🗞️ GENERAL SUMMARY & TOP HIGHLIGHTS

The UN General Assembly dominated the day. Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian delivered a defiant speech — the first time the leader of a country at war with the U.S. has addressed the Assembly — vowing never to accept limits on Iran's civilian nuclear program while leaving the door open to talks; the lone U.S. diplomat walked out. That came a day after Trump threatened to "annihilate" Iran and then touted surprise direct U.S.–Iran talks on the sidelines, which pushed oil prices lower. Trump also signed a security pact with Denmark and Greenland expanding the U.S. military footprint on the island, and Xi Jinping lands in Washington this week, with a possible U.S.–China deal on AI development at the top of the agenda. The Economist's Insider asks whether America's century-long hegemony over Middle East security is ending, noting U.S. troops leave Iraq at month's end.

Closer to home, B.C. Premier David Eby called a snap provincial election for Oct. 24 — two years early and one week after municipal elections — framing it as a mandate to fight Trump's tariffs while the BC Conservatives are leaderless (Capital Daily's take). Nationally, Ottawa is reviewing how to sell the Trans Mountain pipeline, the AFN is pushing back on firm deadlines for major-project approvals, and Modi is expected to visit Canada in December to sign a Canada–India trade deal. Health Canada suspended the licence of Grifols' Winnipeg plasma site after a donor death, and Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 15 years.

In tech, Anthropic and OpenAI released competing models within an hour of each other — Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol and Luna — kicking off what Simon Willison calls a new price war. A criminal group called ShinyHunters claims it stole personnel records on thousands of FBI officials via a jobs portal. Also notable: MIT ended Princeton's 15-year run atop the U.S. News rankings, and the out-of-control Mount Jack wildfire near Sooke grew from 12 to 100 hectares in a day.
