ποΈ GENERAL SUMMARY & TOP HIGHLIGHTS
The day was dominated by the UN General Assembly in New York. Using his address to threaten the "annihilation" of Iran unless a deal is reached, President Trump also celebrated U.S. control over Venezuela's oil reserves ("To the victor belong the spoils"), prompting Cuba's delegation to walk out, while envoys Witkoff and Kushner met Iran's foreign minister on the sidelines. AI tops the UNGA agenda for the first time, this is Guterres' final session, and Canada's Mark Carney is co-launching a "Partners for Multilateralism" initiative with Brazil, the EU and Kenya. In Washington, the major TV networks are boycotting the White House press pool after CNN, MS NOW and Politico were banned, and the administration has removed 750,000+ people from Obamacare marketplaces.
Closer to home, B.C. Premier David Eby called a snap provincial election for Oct. 24, two years early, citing the need for a mandate to handle Trump-driven economic chaos β and timing it while the opposition BC Conservatives are in disarray after leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay resigned amid 13 defections/expulsions. Federally, Ottawa tabled a 240-page omnibus bill to speed project approvals (partly dismantling environmental review rules) and curb labour disruptions, and India's envoy says PM Modi will visit in December to sign a CanadaβIndia trade deal. The suspect in Sunday's Yom Kippur shooting outside a Belleville, Ont., synagogue has died; the wounded officer remains in critical but stable condition.
In tech, the buzz is around Jev, a new "decision model" that returns only numbers (probabilities, scores, choices) rather than text; Google's Android-powered "Googlebooks" launch Oct. 4 from $899; SpaceXAI shipped Grok 4.7; and WIRED/Ars detailed how an undercover Google analyst infiltrated the supply-chain hacking gang behind this spring's npm worm attacks. Unions are also rallying around the threat of AI to job security. Markets rallied Monday (Nasdaq +2.3%) on tech, and Paramount cleared the last hurdle to its $111B Warner Bros. Discovery deal.
