🗞️ GENERAL SUMMARY & TOP HIGHLIGHTS

Picking up from last night's digest (Tue Nov 3, ~7:05 PM PT), which stopped at the opening of live results, the first Senate call (New Hampshire) and a forecast needle leaning Democratic.

Resolved: the midterms were a Democratic landslide. Everything last night left open was settled in the hours after we signed off. The run of NYT alerts — Kean Jr. out in New Jersey (8:06 PM PT), Lindsey Graham's successor Darline Graham beaten in South Carolina by Annie Andrews, Trump telling the Times he'd accept the results, Amy Acton over Vivek Ramaswamy in Ohio, James Talarico over Ken Paxton in Texas, Sherrod Brown back in Ohio, and Gina Hinojosa unseating Gov. Greg Abbott — ended with Democrats winning the Senate at 10:09 PM PT (Globe: six flips at that point: Texas, Ohio, North Carolina, Iowa, South Carolina, Kansas), Susan Collins ousted in Maine at 11:14 PM, and the House clinched at 11:42 PM PT, giving Democrats full control of Congress. By morning 1440 had Democrats projected at at least 54 Senate seats (two races uncalled) and at least 228 House seats with 68 uncalled, possibly 250+. NYT's Evening edition says Republicans lost the House by at least 50 seats, every demographic group swung left, and Democrats are on track to win the House popular vote by about 13 points — the biggest margin since the post-Watergate elections. Governors flipped in Texas, Ohio, Iowa (Rob Sand), Wisconsin (David Crowley) and Georgia, where Keisha Lance Bottoms becomes the first Black woman elected governor of a U.S. state. Still open: Mississippi's Senate race (Scott Colom leading Cindy Hyde-Smith by fewer than 100 votes) and Alaska (ranked-choice tabulation on Nov. 18).

New today — the morning after. VP JD Vance blamed the Iran war for the wipeout (NYT alert, 9:38 AM PT); Trump called that "largely true" but said he wouldn't have done anything differently. Speaker Mike Johnson will not run to lead House Republicans in the minority, and Hakeem Jeffries, poised to be next speaker, says Congress will reassert its power once Democrats take both chambers in January, focusing on affordability and oversight — though Trump's veto limits what they can do. The Economist's Insider asks "Is this the end of the Trump era?" and dedicates Thursday's show (6 PM GMT) to the result. The Globe's framing: voters punished Trump over high prices driven by the Iran war and tariffs on nearly every country, including Canada.

↻ Iran / Middle East. Since last night: 1440 reports the U.S. struck Iranian targets in the Strait of Hormuz; the Globe says Qatar is stepping up mediation but Iran and the U.S. remain far from a deal; NYT says some Iranian clerics and officials want to drop the pledge not to build a nuclear bomb (following last night's chemical-weapons intelligence item). The Trump–Israel aid item we reported last night got a firmer line: Trump says the roughly $4B annual aid package ends after this year. In Israel, President Herzog began consultations Wednesday on who gets first crack at forming a government, Netanyahu or Gadi Eisenkot.

Following up on last night's trade-talk and budget items: good news for agriculture and seafood — Globe Breaking News (Wed 10:11 AM PT) says China has extended big tariff reductions on Canadian lobster, crabs, peas and canola meal for two years after Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu's Beijing meeting. The federal budget is this week (Globe is running a live Q&A on Nov. 6 at 1 PM ET; title "Masters of Our Destiny"; more SME measures expected, as flagged last night). On the Russia/world juniors story from last night, the Globe adds that Hockey Canada's board meets this week on "next steps" (tournament starts Dec. 26 in Edmonton and Red Deer).
