📰 EVENING NEWSLETTER DIGEST

Friday, October 30, 2026, ~7:05 PM PDT — covers Thu Oct 29, 7:02 PM → Fri Oct 30, 7:02 PM PDT (24 hours, since the last digest on Thursday evening)

NEWSLETTERS REVIEWED THIS PERIOD (11 emails): The New York Times — The Evening (2:56 PM PT); The Globe and Mail — Breaking News ×2 (Canada–EU "Alliance for the Future", 10:31 AM PT; Anthropic/Edmonton data centre, 12:10 PM PT) and Morning Update; Atlantic Intelligence (The Atlantic); The Economist — The War Room (monthly bonus edition); Capital Daily (Victoria, BC); TLDR; TLDR Dev; 1440 Daily Digest; Our World in Data — The OWID Brief.

Timing guide: 1440, TLDR, TLDR Dev, Globe Morning Update, Capital Daily and the OWID Brief recap Thursday and overnight; The Evening, the Globe's two breaking alerts and Atlantic Intelligence report Friday. The War Room is a monthly bonus edition. Last night's digest ended about 7:02 PM Thursday, so much of what the morning newsletters carried (Patrick Stewart, DoorDash–Instacart, the Nvidia spy story, the national-security strategy, McCarthy Tétrault, Ontario's deficit, Lagarde, Q3 GDP) was already in last night's digest and is marked as a late recap.

🗞️ GENERAL SUMMARY & TOP HIGHLIGHTS

Picking up from last night's digest (Thu Oct 29, ~7:05 PM), which led with Israel's final count, Brazil's Flávio Bolsonaro, Canada's national-security strategy, Spain's rail crash toll and the Q3 GDP print.

New today — the midterm homestretch. With four days to go, Trump reversed plans to cancel two rallies and will hold events in Kansas and Iowa this weekend, per a White House official; polls show Democrat Adam Hamilton leading Sen. Roger Marshall in a state Trump won by 16 points, and the Iowa Senate race is a dead heat. He's in Florida tonight, while Bill Clinton campaigns in Mississippi for Democrat Scott Colom. An appeals court rejected the administration's bid to make California set aside 20,000 ballots it says went to possible noncitizens, and Elon Musk has given nearly $475M to Republicans this cycle. ↻ Alaska: last night's digest had Gov. Dunleavy's investigation into Mary Peltola's campaign; 1440 adds that Trump has now called for Peltola to be prosecuted and removed from the ballot, and The Evening says Peltola suggested she knew nothing of the "second Dan Sullivan" effort (her former campaign manager reportedly did know). The Atlantic's Will Oremus flags a different election wrinkle: Google's AI Mode refused to say who won the 2020 election before a quick fix, raising questions about AI as a midterm information gateway.

New today — crypto and markets. Hackers stole about $6.3 billion from Binance, apparently the largest crypto heist ever; multiple analytics firms point to North Korea. Binance says it will cover all losses and has helped freeze about $3B of stolen assets (TLDR had the first report this morning). The Evening adds that a tech sell-off drove markets to their worst day in months today (Fri) on worries about AI spending — following Thursday's Alphabet drop (last digest: −10%; 1440 has the final close at −12.3%, with the Nasdaq down 1.4% on the day).

New today — Ukraine. A rare humanitarian window: hundreds of civilians trapped in occupied Oleshky were bused out today via Russia and Belarus and are due in northern Ukraine tomorrow (Sat Oct 31), after Pope Leo XIV's call with Putin and a local truce announced by Melania Trump last week. Separately, 1440 reports a Russian drone strike on a train station in Dnipro that killed at least 14 (Thursday).

Canada. ↻ Canada–EU: the Globe's alert says Canada and the EU launched an "Alliance for the Future" on Friday, committing to an "ever-closer association" short of membership; Carney still described the aim as Canada becoming the EU's "first associate member," even though the Morning Update said the label was dropped from the text. They concluded substantial talks on a digital trade agreement, an updated competition pact, and a deal to facilitate European investment in critical raw materials. New: the Globe reports Anthropic is in talks to lease a hyperscale data-centre campus northeast of Edmonton in Alberta's industrial heartland (Sturgeon County), with Calgary developer Beacon Data Centers; the site would have four data halls, per an Alberta Utilities Commission filing from July 17. Everything else on the Globe Morning Update (security strategy, law-firm breaches, Ontario's $16.9B deficit) was covered last night; new items are a Bridle Path home invasion (three shot, Thursday) with Toronto home invasions up 35% this year, and a cruise-ship world voyage cut short in Cambodia by fuel prices.

Still developing / smaller threads. ↻ Patrick Stewart (died at 86; covered last night) and ↻ DoorDash–Instacart ($17B; covered last night) are repeated across 1440 and TLDR. ↻ Nvidia: 1440 adds that Trump was reportedly briefed on Alice Huang's alleged ties a year ago and took no action. ↻ Pentagon: 1440 reports Hegseth fired Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia and referred him for possible prosecution over alleged leaks on Iran and Ukraine. ↻ Israel: Likud now claims fraud and foreign interference boosted Arab turnout; police dispute it. In sport, the Atlanta Dream forced Game 7 of the WNBA Finals (tomorrow, 8 PM ET). Health and policy: Obamacare premiums are set to rise 13% next year.
