ποΈ GENERAL SUMMARY & TOP HIGHLIGHTS
Geopolitics and conflict dominated the weekend. Hurricane Isaias, the first Atlantic hurricane of 2026, struck the Gulf Coast on Oct 9-10 as a Category 3 storm near the Florida Panhandle, killing at least four (1440). On Oct 10 the Iran-backed Houthis hit a Saudi airport, killing at least 12 and injuring 300, the deadliest attack in a Gulf Arab country since the US-Israeli war with Iran began in February (NYT Breaking). Earlier, 1440 reported a Houthi strike on Riyadh airport that killed three (NBC). Oil is high: Brent rose 4.1% to $104.3 (AP), US diesel averages $6.28/gal, and Trump says Russia will supply diesel to the US (AP). Also in the US: eight people were killed in a shooting in Erie, Pa. on Oct 10, and Katie Zacharia was named White House press secretary.
Nobel week. Navi Pillay, 85, the South African jurist and former UN human rights chief, won the Peace Prize (AP). The Trump administration sanctioned the ICC hours later. Canadian poet Anne Carson won the Literature prize (AP).
Canada's economy and politics. Canada lost 68,000 jobs in September, with unemployment at 6.5% (Globe). The biggest drop was in the public sector, not in tariff-exposed industries. Stelco is going ahead with up to 500 Ontario layoffs despite Ottawa's Investment Canada Act ultimatum (Globe). The Parti QuΓ©bΓ©cois won a minority government in Quebec, but its leader promises no referendum until after 2029. In Alberta, a separatist referendum is set for Oct 19, and a First Nation has challenged the federal "national priority" designation of the Pacific Link oil pipeline.
AI. OpenAI released 377 new proofs, claiming solutions to 100+ open math problems, and mathematicians are in shock (Atlantic). The Economist argues for AI guardrails, and AI-generated music is flooding streaming services.
