🗞️ GENERAL SUMMARY & TOP HIGHLIGHTS
The Trump–Xi summit ended with lots of pageantry but little to show for it. Xi Jinping wrapped up his three-day Washington state visit with [tea at the White House][n_tea] and a stop at the National Archives. Trump called their friendship "truly great" and staged a supersonic bomber flyover. But the leaders made [no visible progress on AI, trade or the Iran war][nyt_tea_alt]. Xi pushed Trump to oppose Taiwan independence and promised two giant pandas for Zoo Atlanta. Washington floated an AI-safety alert exchange with Beijing. The Globe's James Griffiths calls the détente [fragile][g_griffiths], and The Atlantic argues Trump should stop hosting summits. At the UN, delegates walked out on Netanyahu's speech. Separately, the NYT reports the U.A.E. [reportedly warned Netanyahu before Oct. 7][n_israel].
In the U.S., the Supreme Court handed Trump a voting win and ICE arrests are quietly setting records. The Court [let the administration deploy a national voter-screening database][n_vote] built on citizenship and Social Security data. The three liberal justices dissented and warned that valid voters could be purged. The NYT also finds [ICE arrests at record highs][n_ice], now spread across the country through local police rather than big-city surges. On the weather front, a [nor'easter is set to stall off New Jersey][n_storm_forecast] into next week, and Hurricane Nolo threatens [nearly three feet of rain][n_rain] in storm-weary Hawaii. Markets are uneasy: the 30-year Treasury yield hit 5.4%, its highest since 2004, and mortgage rates passed 7%.
In Canada, the big stories are hate, AI liability and wildfire. Police confirmed the [Belleville synagogue shooting on Yom Kippur was hate-motivated][g_synagogue]. First details of the [Tumbler Ridge shooter's ChatGPT conversations][g_tumbler] show the chatbot gave tactical advice and coached her around OpenAI's safeguards. B.C. and survivors are [suing OpenAI for negligence][c_tumbler]. Close to home, rain is helping crews fight the [276-hectare Sooke wildfire][c_sooke]. Elections BC is [hiring 17,000 workers][c_elections] for the Oct. 24 provincial vote. In AI and tech, Oracle issued a force-majeure notice on its $165B New Mexico data centre after the state blocked a gas pipeline over water and emissions. Google's Suncatcher orbital data centre satellite launches Oct. 1. And the DOJ is backing AI companies in copyright suits, arguing "AI dominance" is a national-security matter.
