πŸ—žοΈ GENERAL SUMMARY & TOP HIGHLIGHTS

The Canada-U.S. trade war escalated sharply today. Canada's retaliatory tariffs on $28-billion of American goods β€” covering nearly 900 items from clothing to metals and electronics β€” took effect at 12:01am Tuesday, and rather than negotiate, President Trump spent the weekend posting derisively about Canada and floating a ban on Bombardier. By evening he'd followed through with a sweeping ban on Canadian alcohol, motorcycles, and some dairy products, plus new 50% tariffs on cheeses, aluminum products, paper goods, and furniture. Prime Minister Carney's office says no eleventh-hour talks took place before the countertariffs kicked in.

Elsewhere, Germany's far-right AfD surged to victory in a regional election in Saxony-Anhalt β€” the first time a far-right party has come close to a state government since WWII β€” rattling Chancellor Merz, who ruled out any coalition with them. In Washington, Smithsonian secretary Lonnie Bunch announced his resignation after seven years under pressure from the White House to promote more "patriotic" history, while Britain, Canada, and France moved to ban trade with Israeli West Bank settlements over alleged ethnic cleansing.

On the tech and safety front, OpenAI claims its newest model solved one of math's "Millennium Problems" (the Navier-Stokes equations) in 88 hours. Investigators are meanwhile combing through the wreckage of an Amazon-contracted cargo plane that overshot a Miami runway and killed at least five people, and a 22-year-old accused of orchestrating one of the largest crypto thefts in U.S. history ($240M+ in bitcoin) faces a plea hearing today.
